With the Dragon Quest franchise being insanely popular in Japan, it was only a matter of time before publisher Square Enix formally announced that a collection of the series' earlier games is in the works. According to the official site, said collection will be released on the Wii and will contain all five past titles on one disk. The games in the collection are the original Famicom versions of Dragon Quest I, Dragon Quest II, and Dragon Quest III, and their respective Super Famicom (SNES) versions, specifically Dragon Quest I & II and Dragon Quest III.
The five games in the collection will be the original versions that can be played using the Wii Remote, Classic Controller, and the GameCube controller. This collection is to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the long-running series. Square Enix also added that it has sold 57 million units of the franchise's many titles as of December 2010 and that there will be more news on future developments for the anniversary.
Square Enix's Dragon Quest collection for the Wii--which contains the first three games and the Super Famicom revamps under one Wii disc to celebrate the game's 25th anniversary--has made it to the top of the Japanese charts, according to the recent Media Charts sales update for the week of September 12 to September 18. Dragon Quest X is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), where a customized player character travels the world of Astoltia completing quests and fighting monsters.[1][2] While starting out as a human character, the player character is later transferred into the body of one of five available tribes: the powerful Ogre, the inquisitive Puklipo, the aquatic Weddie, the forest-dwelling Elves, and the mining Dwarfs. Humans populate multiple settlements across Astoltia.[3] Later versions added an additional Dragon race.[4] The game utilizes cloud storage for save files and other game data.[5] As with most MMORPGs, Dragon Quest X requires a subscription fee to access, however there is a daily two-hour window dubbed "Kid's Time" where players can access and play the game free of charge.[6]
In the first expansion, the protagonist travels to Rendashia, the central continent of Astoltia where Nelgel's seal was created. The protagonist investigates the demonic events there and continues to work towards stopping Nelgel's legacy for good.[9][11] In the second expansion, the protagonist becomes embroiled in a royal power struggle, at the same time as a massive monster invasion of Astoltia, controlled by a mysterious hooded man. They eventually journey to the world of Nadragand to assist an enigmatic race of dragonic people defeat an ancient evil plaguing their world.[12] The third expansion has the protagonist travel across several periods of time in the distant past and future, hoping to stop a future where Astoltia is completely destroyed while learning of their own origins. In the fourth expansion, the protagonist travels to the world of the demons themselves, and fights to stop an evil plaguing Astoltia since the time of its creation. In the fifth expansion, the heroic deeds that took place in the world of the demons attracts the attention of the heavens themselves, where the protagonist's new adventure takes place.
Until E3 2006, only a small amount was known about the Wii's games lineup. However, during its press conference Nintendo unveiled a flurry of new games for the system as well as showed, for the first time, gameplay footage of games that had thus far only been announced. Spearheading Nintendo's Wii lineup are and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (also available for the GameCube), both of which will be available (alongside Wii Sports) when the system launches in Q4 2006, & Pokémon Battle Revolution. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, previously confirmed as a launch title, will now be released in 2007. The frantic minigame collection WarioWare: Smooth Moves will be released shortly thereafter.[6] Super Mario Galaxy is a long-awaited new Mario platformer that will be released "within the first six months" of the system's launch.[7] A new entry in the popular Super Smash Bros. series, titled Super Smash Bros. Brawl, was shown and has a loose 2007 release date. Games for which footage or other press materials was presented but were not given release dates include the arcade racer Excite Truck(now confirmed as a launch title), the action/beat 'em up Project H.A.M.M.E.R., a new entry in the long-running strategy/RPG franchise Fire Emblem, and the survival game Disaster: Day of Crisis. Games not shown in any form but confirmed to exist at some stage in development include Wii versions of the popular Animal Crossing and Mario Kart franchises. 2b1af7f3a8
